Isn’t it funny how everyone has that little voice inside their head? And how that voice talks with you, back and forth, all day long? Just a tiny little dialogue from a tiny little voice. Sometimes it’s a delusional rant, but other times, it takes spectacular shapes of pure honesty between you and, well, yourself. These bits and pieces define what we see and perceive as humans. And we saw plenty on our trip to the Caribbean, but the perception, well, that’s up to you…—Dane Gudauskas

Leader in Distinctly Designed Footwear Highlights Company-Owned Store Opening with an Outdoor Jam Session Performance by Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real

In-Store “Lo-Fi” Vibe Creates Unique Brand and Shopping Experience

IRVINE, Calif. – April 22, 2013Sanuk, a division of Deckers Outdoor Corporation (NASDAQGS: DECK), celebrated the grand opening of its first company-owned store at the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica on April 20, 2013. To celebrate Sanuk’s first flagship store, Deckers and Sanuk executives kicked it off with an official opening ceremony and topped off the evening with a fun-filled jam session by California-based musical artist and Sanuk ambassador Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real.

“We wanted to bring the Sanuk brand experience to life in a great shopping destination that represents what we stand for here at Sanuk, fun, humor and smiles.  I think we’ve found a great balance here at Santa Monica,” said Jake Brandman, Sanuk president. “As our first brand-owned store, we were able to bring the humorous aspect of the brand to life and create that deep connection with existing and new customers. We see this store as a place for us to explore alongside with our customers and showcase our innovative Sidewalk Surfers and absurdly comfortable Yoga Mat and Beer Cozy sandals.  This opening represents a great step in the evolution of Sanuk.”

The new store is approximately 1,000 square feet of retail space, featuring unique elements, a lo-fi design look and feel and offers exclusive products only available at the Santa Monica location. Upon entering the space, a collage installation featuring a collection of outdoor and indoor items creates a jumbled art décor, items that harken to a sense of fun, but with a twist and turn that has everyone looking for hidden nuances.

The store’s concept, a “Space to Play” is inspired by an unfinished basement or garage, that place where people sit back, relax and enjoy some relaxed moments with their friends. The store brings the brand’s emotion to life, featuring floating stud walls and many raw finishes, letting shoppers fill the space with their imagination. Creative solutions that will make the shopping experience unique are sprinkled throughout the store; one notable feature is the modular cleat system that will house many of the sandals and a pantry-style cabinetry that turns a traditional shoe wall into a self-service system.

Sanuk will offer a wide selection of styles and colors for both sandals and Sidewalk Surfers, featuring a mix of iconic favorites and latest bold designs for men, women and kids. The store also will feature exclusive merchandise such as branded sweatshirts, T-shirts, hats and accessories among many other products, further showcasing the breadth and growth of the brand’s collection.  Like the Sanuk brand, the store’s music selection will be an eclectic mix of everything from bluegrass, to reggae, to old school funk.

“The whole goal for this store was to create a space where we could play – we’ve taken all the classic Sanuk ingredients and stirred them up into a fresh recipe that we believe will set the tone for future Sanuk stores,” said Michael Minter, Sanuk global director of marketing. “The Santa Monica store offers an irreverent take on our brand and we’re excited to evolve the brand into an immersive experience.”

Sanuk is located on 1453 3rd St. Promenade in Santa Monica and store operating hours are from Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. For directions to the Santa Monica Sanuk store location, visit www.sanuk.com/stores. Sunny Garcia Wins ISA World Masters Title Again on Fin-S

Sunny Garcia

Encinitas, CA (May 5, 2013) – Congratulations to Fin-S team rider, Sunny Garcia, on winning the ISA World Masters Championship and Gold Medal for his second time in a row once again riding Fin-S high performance fins to victory. The event took place in Montanita, Ecuador in solid (x”) point break perfection on x date. Sunny was using his Fin-S Signature Series Honeycomb SG1 fins, part of the new 2013 Fin-S collection now available in retail stores.

Sunny Garcia had this to say about this and his series of recent wins, “My boards feel perfect and my fins are working insane! They’re the best fins I’ve ridden.” Fin-S, a surf technology company founded by brothers Scott and Chad Posner, manufactures a completely screwless and toolless fin system that uses the patented SpringLock™ technology. The engineered fin box uses a corrosion-proof stainless steel spring to keep the fin locked securely within the fin box.

“It’s been great working with Sunny on dialing in his signature fin template. He’s such a powerful surfer so he’s really put our product to the test and he’s stoked. Also, since Sunny has been using Fin-S he’s been winning a lot of events, which we’re all happy about.” Says Scott Posner, President and Co-Founder of Fin-S. The design of Sunny’s Signature Series fin is inspired from one of Sunny’s fish scale tattoos with added color into the fins. Sunny’s ISA surfboards were all shaped in Hawaii by the world renowned Wade Tokoro. Fin-S has also been working with Wade for almost two years now.

Fin-S launched its breakthrough technology in January 2012 and now offers a complete line of Honeycomb fins and Hi-Per Resin molded fins to match any surfer’s preference. Fin-S is now available from a growling list of world class shapers including Channel Islands, Lost, Rusty, Sharp Eye, Xanadu, Stretch, WRV, HIC, Super Brand, Town and Country, JC Hawaii, Cole, Hydroflex, and Surftech.

Congrats again to Sunny and to team Hawaii on winning the gold.

2012-13 Steep and Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge Results

Professional Surfer Nathan Florence and Water Photographer Tony Heff honored the legacy of Sion Miloksy by winning the 2012-13 Steep and Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge. During its second year, this contest grew immensely. Participants submitted their sickest steep and deep shots from the water, land and aerial angles of Banzai Pipeline and Backdoor from November 2012-March 2013.

“We had more participants than the first year with more surfers and photographers alike,” said Sion’s wife and contest director of the Steep and Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge. “Camera companies are taking notice of the contest from the photography side and we are lucky to have Aqua Tech be a sponsor this year. Our sponsors have showed more interest and support in the cause and we are so grateful. Everyone has been helping put the word out on this contest and we are hoping this contest just gets better and better as we get more organized. This is just a great event for the boys who charge and shoot Pipe while perpetuating Sion Milosky’s extraordinary legacy. We are stoked to put this together to showcase all the sick images that come from Pipe and we would like to thank all the sponsors, judges and participants.”

Surf Photographer Tony Heff, 33, won a $2500 prize purse from Vans, a custom-engraved-framed-picture of the winning image and an $3,000 Aqua Tech underwater housing camera pack (water housing, pistol grip and dome port) for the winning image of Nathan Florence. Heff—who is originally from Satellite Beach, Florida, but now resides at Sunset Beach—nailed the shot on the last day of January in tricky 16-to 24-foot wave face heights at the world’s most dangerous wave.

“Pipe was pretty good that day and then the evening was a little tricky with not as many good waves coming through [compared to the morning],” explained Heff. “I went down to the beach thinking it was going to be really good and perfectly backlit evening session at Pipe, but it was not looking good at all. There was absolutely nobody shooting from the water, but I was there with all my stuff so I decided to swim out and see what I could get anyway. There was a lot of current and all over the place. I swam out and that was the only wave that came through and I shot. It was the only photo I got from the whole swim that evening. It just all came together. Like I said, it was all over the place so being in the right spot was little trickier than some days out there.”

Sion Milosky was known for being in the right spot when Pipeline was huge. Miloksy was an inspirational person for the way he skillfully charged and negotiated giant waves and the Banzai Pipeline. Furthermore, Sion’s commitment to his family, friends and trade is perhaps the most inspiring part of his life says Nathan Florence.

“Sion was one of the gnarliest guys to ever come out of [Hawaii],” said Nathan Florence, 19, who is the younger brother of John John Florence. “The sick part was that he had a family, he had a job building custom-gates—like we have a sick gate system on our house that he built—during his off-time he was making money for his family and picking up his kids from school and bringing them to the beach. He was charging big Pipe or big outer reefs harder than anyone. We all definitely looked up to him a ton and it was one of the most radical shockers when he passed away because it’s hard to believe such a good person could go so fast like that. Sion is definitely one of the top legends.”

Florence—was awarded a $2500 prize purse from Vans, a custom-engraved-framed-picture of the winning image, a custom Will Scovell surfboard and Kicker audio gear—had his eyes set on the Steep and Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge from the start. He was unsure about his chances of winning. So the teenager from the North Shore of Oahu was over-the-moon stoked to find out he won.

“This is the sickest thing I ever won! Pretty much our whole little group—or our generation or age group—was so psyched when the [Steep and Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge] came out and the fact that I actually won is baffling,” beamed Nathan. “I had no idea because I entered kind of late that one of my shots would win. It feels super good and I’m super psyched!”
